Out of My Mind: Sophia Huynh
I thought this book was amazing and I loved it! It shows deep emotions and shows how the main character, Melody gets past hardships because of her disability to not be able to speak and having a hard time moving. The author not just makes us feel sympathy for Melody, but I look up to her to be able to be strong and keep going through life. I thought the most important part of the book was the beginning and the end of the book when it says," Words. I'm surrounded by thousands of words. Maybe millions. Cathedral. mayonnaise. Pomegranate. Mississippi. Neapolitan. Hippopotamus. Silky. Terrifying. Iridescent. Tickle. Sneeze. Wish. Worry.
Words have always swirled around me like snowflakes-each one delicate and different, each one melting untouched in my hands." I think this is basically the whole basis of the story and the story just builds to the one thing melody has always longed, words, a voice, a say. One theme I have to say is never give up, and keep trying no matter how hard the problem or task is. Melody shows this by enduring the hard fact that she can't speak and is strong willed. In the end, she accepts her as herself and the things people say to her usually don't get to her.
Melody is the most important character in the story because she is the main character and the narrator. Also, everything that happens in the book is in her point of view and all the events happen to her and only we, the audience knows what she thinks. Another very important character is Melody's friend, Rose because she is the first person close to Melody's age that becomes friends with her. This changes Melody's life, but her actions end up affecting Melody's actions and emotions, whether they are good or bad. When she starts avoiding her, it brings Melody's mood down very much. Also, according to the book, Mrs. V. is also a very important character in the story because without her, Melody wouldn't be able to go through everyday life, and she thought melody that just because that she has a disability, she just has to try harder to accomplish her goal. She also treats Melody as her own child and stands up for her at the time when one of the characters, Claire talks bad about her.
A big symbol in this story are words, voice. This is all Melody actually wanted. It is the main cause of the story and it shows how hard Melody's life is without them, and how badly she wants them so she can spill all her feelings and emotions out. It is the biggest and most important representation of all her hopes and dreams.
All in all, I thought that this is definitely one of my favorite books and inspired me to do better and gave me a better meaning of the phrase," Never Give Up."
Again, this is a very inspiring book about the main character, Melody overcomes many hardships through her life because of her one disability.
